Penitensya

In our hometown of Sta. Rosa in Concepcion, Tarlac, the old Filipino traditions of self-flagellation and carrying the cross to recreate Christ's passion are still very much alive and well. Deemed by some as barbaric and not at all necessary, I find the practices comforting... A continuation of a past slowly but surely being erased by technology, globalization and the modernization of our rural landscape. Aside from that, in as much as we ourselves fight for our rights and personal beliefs, isn't it just right for us to respect other people's beliefs and traditions even though we don't understand their personal reasons behind it?
